Berlin is a fundamentally musical city that nurtures and promotes all different kinds of music. As it is almost impossible to describe here the entire diversity of music in Berlin, we will discreetly overlook (for the purposes of this post only) the indisputable status of classical music and walk the streets of the city in search of the music that mingles with the people, in the clubs, live venues and cabarets.
Cabaret
Although the art of cabaret originated in Paris in 1881, it quickly spread to cities abroad, Berlin being among the first. Following the French tradition, the Berlin cabarets attracted avant-garde artists of all kinds who shared their ideas and fought the conservative establishment and the censorship inflicted by the Kaisers in the early years and Hitler’s Nazi party during the 30’s. We saw Little Boots announced by influential music bloggers as the new pop sensation of 2009 and watched her bedroom version of the to-be-hit song “Meddle”. The single is now out and we first stream on Youtube before we download from itunes; this is what we hear.
The production (arrangement, midi, samples) does not live up to our expectations and the piano (or keyboard) is nowhere to be heard, the whole atmosphere of the song is thus lost. Apart from that, there is no decent video clip, vital for the promotion of a new song. The industry people should not underestimate the average listener thinking that they are not concerned with the quality of the sound, or that they don?t understand. A production carelessly made will not succeed because people will subconsciously be drawn towards the banal but refined songs of Lady Gaga or Leona Lewis. Continue reading »
