Berlin is a fundamentally musical city that nurtures and promotes all different kinds of music. As it is almost impossible to describe here the entire diversity of music in Berlin, we will discreetly overlook (for the purposes of this post only) the indisputable status of classical music and walk the streets of the city in search of the music that mingles with the people, in the clubs, live venues and cabarets.
Cabaret
Although the art of cabaret originated in Paris in 1881, it quickly spread to cities abroad, Berlin being among the first. Following the French tradition, the Berlin cabarets attracted avant-garde artists of all kinds who shared their ideas and fought the conservative establishment and the censorship inflicted by the Kaisers in the early years and Hitler’s Nazi party during the 30’s.
