Wichael R. Willow and Angel Live, (an acoustic duet called : Peter and the Wolf) performing the song: Wicked little town (cover version). The original song is in the soundtrack, Hedwig and the Angry Inch written by Stephen Trusk, sung by John Cameron Mitchel.
This is a very early sample from the the acoustic duet Peter and the Wolf (Wichael R. Willow:guitars and Vocals, Angel Live:Back Vocals). The song is taken from the cover collection album “Taking it Down” (2003) which was mainly dedicated to David Bowie, Hedwig and the angry inchand a few other singers/songwriters who are the reason we exist in music today. David Bowie’s narration in Peter and the Wolf (by Sergei Prokovief) inspired Michael and Angel to choose the duet’s name.Continue reading »
In this year’s Novello awards an “unknown” band entered the race: The Leisure Society. And surprise, surprise, the usual suspects were all awarded, while the “homeless”, independent, not patronized by labels band was left out.
I still wonder why the organizers even bothered to enter the song in the competition since the awards are predestined for the money-machines who finally got them. It is definitely not for their musical superiority, definitely not for their good looks. The most logical explanation is that an outsider can be used as an attraction for the surprise-thirsty audience; “outsider against the mainstream” is a good story for the media even if the outsider does not make it. It is an incident that makes the event more memorable. Posted: 22 May 2009. Continue reading »
Copyright has always been an important issue that some musicians and other artists ignore. More or less everybody knows what the copyright is but a brief investigation is necessary.
It is a procedure that gives to the creator of the intellectual property the exclusive right of his/her work for a specific time which lasts between 50 and 100 years (depending on the country?s legislation) after the creator?s death, after which period the work enters into the public domain (adaption). The copyright also gives to the creator the right to permit or prevent the use of that work by others. Therefore the creator is secured and no one else without permission can use the work. The owner of this horn-shaped men’s toilet (in a pub in Freibourg – Germany) has received complaints by insulted musician customers. To my mind this is an impressive work of art that could be appropriate for a modern art exhibition or Biennale but it seems like it is deemed as an insult by some musicians. However, I as a musician opposed todiscrimination against artists, find it really interesting because obviously the designer?s intent was not to provoke or insult.
I would not be mistaken to assume that those who complained were classical musicians, who are known for their “purism”. I remember my old classical guitar teacher who used to tell me: “What are you listening to? David Bowie and Guns n Roses? These are just worthless little songs” and “The term classical music is incorrect, it should be called serious music!”. As if the folk, jazz, rock etc were non-serious, worthless music….
