Charlie Chaplin was one of the most important artists of the cinema. An artist who whatever was pretending to be in his movies made it action in his life; he denounced the conservative establishment and fought against the stereotypes.
“The Great Dictator” is probably his most important work, not just because it is a good movie but because of its powerful meaning. Every progressive person would agree with that.
In the movie Charlie has a dual role. He is both a dictator, an Adolf Hitler replica, and a Jew barber who confronts the discrimination and violence of the fascist regime. Towards the end of the movie the original dictator falls into a river, gets dirty and is led into a concentration camp, while the barber, secretly dressed like a soldier in order to escape from the camp, is mistaken for the dictator.
