Δημοσιεύω το πρώτο μου άρθρο στα Ελληνικά με αφορμή το κλείσιμο μιας ακόμα ιστοσελίδας downloading. Συγκεκριμένα όπως αναφέρουν τα Νέα online “Στη σύλληψη των διαχειριστών της ιστοσελίδας gamato.info, μέσω της οποίας οι χρήστες μπορούσαν παράνομα να κατεβάζουν δωρεάν αρχεία ήχου και εικόνας προχώρησαν οι άνδρες της δίωξης ηλεκτρονικού εγκλήματος της Ασφάλειας Αττικής. Οι συλλήψεις σημειώθηκαν μετά από συντονισμένη επιχείρηση σε όλη την Ελλάδα. Σύμφωνα με πληροφορίες, οι έρευνες ξεκίνησαν μετά από καταγγελία εταιρίας, που ζήτησε την προστασία των πνευματικών δικαιωμάτων της”. (Τελευταία ενημέρωση: 10/03/2010 13:43). Τον Δεκέμβρη του 2009, μία ακόμα παρόμοια ιστοσελίδα έκλεισε (το γνωστό greek-fun.com) με την σύλληψη των διαχειριστών όπου τους αποδόθηκαν παρόμοιες ευθύνες περί παράνομης διακίνησης υλικού και καταπάτησης του νόμου περί πνευματικής ιδιοκτησίας. 2: David Bowie, Heathen
Same good as his previous album “Hours” and together a million times better than “Reality”. Listening to the tracks “Slip Away” (tr 3), “Slow Burn” (tr 4), “The Angels Have Gone” (9), “Everyone Says Hi” (10), one thing we understand. Bowie never gives up. He cannot compose a new Ziggy of course, we cannot have another “Heroes” but it is hard to think of another artist who has been around for so long creating new material with so much freshness and originality as Bowie does. Bowie does not fall in the usual trap of repeating himself, like a lot of old famous musicians do. He continues creating meaningful albums by simply changing his style instead of becoming a recycling machine. One of the problems in the music industry today is that the audience expects all artists’ works to be the same as the well-accepted previous. Why do the artists have to stick to their past and never deviate? Bowie knows very well what creativity means. Give it a chance and listen to it a couple of times. You may like it or not, but one thing is sure, nobody can dispute Bowie’s majesty. Continue reading »

If you are a composer and you are struggling writing your own music and/or songs you may find yourself asking the very much uncomfortable questions “Is my music good enough”?, “What I am doing”?, “How can I compose a song like this or that band”?
There are many tips about how to compose better music and how to improve one?s composition skills. My opinion is that, nobody can tell you how to write music. The only advice is try to enrich your musical influences, be as more opened as you can to different music styles and this will affect positively your inspiration.
Apart from that, I found some a useful tips in a statement of Philip Larkin which was included his speech as a chairman of the 1977 Booker Prize judging panel. (Printed in Required Writing Miscellaneous Pieces 1955-1982. Faber, 1983). Despite that this statement has mostly to do with writing fiction rather than composing music, the same approach could be adopted in the case of songwriting. Continue reading »

Electronic Music:
“Electronic music: Music made by producing, modifying and recording sounds, and reproducing it by electroacoustical means. Electronic music has become very important since World War II” (Willi Apel 1969).When we talk of the evolution of music today it is inevitable to refer to electronic music. Electronic music is interwoven with the past, present and future of music. We may return to pure acoustic music, we may combine acoustic with electronic sounds or we may indulge in pure electronic music. Nothing can stop us going back and forth in time. However, acoustic sounds are not being lost or forgotten. The acoustic instruments, the piano, the guitar, the brass, the harp, the fiddle can by no means be permanently replaced. This is not the purpose of electronic music. Although acoustic instruments are often substituted by digital or electronic ones either for aesthetic or for financial reasons (e.g. using string samples is much cheaper than recording a whole strings ensemble) in more than a few cases the acoustic instruments are preferred to anything digital because the lack of them would sound fake, unnatural.
