1) 2002: David Bowie, Heathen

Same good as his previous album “Hours” and together a million times better than “Reality”. Listening to the tracks “Slip Away” (tr 3), “Slow Burn” (tr 4), “The Angels Have Gone” (9), “Everyone Says Hi” (10), one thing we understand. Bowie never gives up. He cannot compose a new Ziggy of course, we cannot have another “Heroes” but it is hard to think of another artist who has been around for so long creating new material with so much freshness and originality as Bowie does. Bowie does not fall in the usual trap of repeating himself, like a lot of old famous musicians do. He continues creating meaningful albums by simply changing his style instead of becoming a recycling machine. One of the problems in the music industry today is that the audience expects all artists’ works to be the same as the well-accepted previous. Why do the artists have to stick to their past and never deviate? Bowie knows very well what creativity means. Give it a chance and listen to it a couple of times. You may like it or not, but one thing is sure, nobody can dispute Bowie’s majesty. Continue reading »

It is well known that the fame industry has its roots in the English-speaking countries especially the US and the UK where most of the famous singers/bands of the world come from. Even in the rest of the world especially in Germany, Sweden, Finland and other countries who tend to have good English command in their education, many singers choose to sing in English hoping to achieve an international career. There is also a controversial theory supporting that rock music works better with English lyrics. In my opinion every language and music could suit together. There is always a solution of how to successfully combine different things. Nevertheless, as English is the dominant language, it is the number one and probably only option for those who wish to pursue an international career in the music industry. Continue reading »

0-berlin_masterBerlin is a fundamentally musical city that nurtures and promotes all different kinds of music. As it is almost impossible to describe here the entire diversity of music in Berlin, we will discreetly overlook (for the purposes of this post only) the indisputable status of classical music and walk the streets of the city in search of the music that mingles with the people, in the clubs, live venues and cabarets.

Cabaret

Although the art of cabaret originated in Paris in 1881, it quickly spread to cities abroad, Berlin being among the first. Following the French tradition, the Berlin cabarets attracted avant-garde artists of all kinds who shared their ideas and fought the conservative establishment and the censorship inflicted by the Kaisers in the early years and Hitler’s Nazi party during the 30’s.
